Women who try to be “supermoms,” whether single or married, maintaining a career and running a household simultaneously, are “swimming upstream.” This is not to say that all of these women have chosen this path, but the fact that so many upper-middle class women choose to go down it, and that gays and lesbians (married or single) and older women are also having children, via adoption or IVF, has helped to reduce the stigma against single motherhood.
