March 4, 2022 – eNewsletter #9

It is a tiny and interesting environment: A senior appreciate tale revisited

On March 18, 2017, I published an eNewsletter about Phil and Sue, two of my Jackson High University (Michigan) classmates, which incorporated the over image I took in February of that calendar year. The three of us graduated jointly in 1957.

Developing up, Phil and Sue ended up buddies but never dated. He as soon as instructed me he favored Sue due to the fact the fourth quality. Soon after higher college graduation, they did not see every other until our 50th class reunion in 2007. There, they only talked for 20 minutes. Both expressed that they experienced been in unsatisfactory marriages.

Ten many years went by. Phil and his spouse experienced not lived collectively for five of people many years, but Phil was her caregiver until finally she handed in 2016.

Right after Sue was divorced, she also grew to become a caregiver for one more classmate of ours.

Phil and Sue lived far aside he in Palm Springs, California, and Sue in the vicinity of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Right after Phil’s wife died, he wondered about Sue. He bought Sue’s mobile phone range from Marty, our course historian. He and Sue talked by cell phone a couple occasions in January 2017.

Then, on February 1 of that yr, Sue called Phil to explain to him that the individual she experienced been caregiving passed absent. Phil and Sue agreed to communicate more commonly.

From February 3 to February 6, their cell phone discussions revealed how considerably they cared for each other. Phil invited Sue to fly to California to see him.

On February 8, Sue flew to the Ontario Airport (east of L.A), shut to where Phil lived. Throughout the following 7 days, their discussions revealed they had constantly favored each individual other, and that foreseeable future time was incredibly cherished.

On February 15, Sue mentioned to Phil, “If we are going to get married, why never you check with me?”

Phil replied, “OK, I just did.”

Sue went back to Michigan to retrieve more garments. On February 24, she flew back again to Ontario Airport. Her plane landed at 10 a.m. At 11 a.m., Sue and Phil ended up married at the Orange County Clerk business in Fullerton.

The following day, they stopped to see Greta and me at our Dana Place household, which is when I took the higher than photo of them. Greta remembers how happy Phil was since he was now married to the woman he had been smitten with considering the fact that the fourth quality.

Very amazing tale. It all occurred in a few months. They were like Storybook Kids, the title of a tune that Nancy Sinatra created common. (link at the close of today’s post).

However, tragically, four months afterwards, Phil had a coronary heart assault and died.

Sue afterwards remarried her first husband.

A 2022 update on Phil and Sue’s tale

This January, I been given an e mail from Norma, a Champ, who wrote, “In your write-up about Sue and Phil, I suspect there may possibly be one thing fishy about Sue’s relationship to Phil and then remarriage to her to start with partner.”

I was baffled by her concern. I replied, “Where and when did you browse my post about Sue and Phil? I wrote about them five many years in the past.”

Norma responded, “I read about them in your March 22, 2017, post in The Capistrano Dispatch newspaper. I picked up that newspaper at the teach cease in San Juan Capistrano. What a surprise! I realized Phil. He experienced been in our smaller church group in Riverside County. Our group members did not even know he experienced been formerly married.

“After examining your write-up, I subscribed to your eNewsletter and examine about Phil and Sue a few more moments. I’ve been a Champ ever due to the fact.”

I claimed, “I am dumbfounded. What a coincidence that you understood him. But why did you generate me about Sue and Phil 5 many years later on?”

Norma explained, “Last Oct, I listened to your online Senior Courting speech to the Alzheimer’s Modern society. Throughout the speech, you talked about the worth of seniors putting estate strategies in purchase and you pointed out that Phil experienced died just 4 months soon after marrying Sue and hadn’t current his estate to involve her.

“Then, you wrote that you helped Sue get a portion of Phil’s inheritance cash. And afterwards, she remarried her 1st partner. I considered that was fishy.”

I stated to Norma, “When I shared Sue’s plight with my estate organizing attorney, Jeffrey Hartman, of San Clemente, he claimed that beneath California law Sue was entitled to specified widow’s legal rights, even even though she wasn’t talked about in his estate. She experienced approved in her head that she experienced been disinherited. In its place, Sue ended up receiving 1000’s of pounds.

“There was absolutely nothing fishy about Sue’s story. Phil was nuts about her and experienced admired her for additional than 60 years he would have been thrilled that she obtained some revenue.”

Earning this story even extra serendipitous, I had recognized that Norma’s email was identified as becoming from East Liverpool, Ohio. I assumed her email might be about my dad’s spouse and children who grew up there. Dad’s father was well known–a state of Ohio senator. I talked about that to Norma. She claimed her relatives lived two blocks from the Blake’s.

And Norma’s father and my dad experienced both graduated from The Ohio State University, equally majoring in ceramic engineering. I surprise if they ever met? Most likely so.

We’re all connected in this globe.

Two senior lessons from today’s story

 1. In looking for a mate, never overlook to go to course and relatives reunions, weddings, and other social events. A person never is aware whom you could satisfy and what adventures are lurking out there for you.

2. Do your heirs a favor. Have a written estate program, and or a will. Do not move intestate (without the need of a will). You don’t want your assets to have to go by way of probate. Make people files a major priority as we are all receiving older. If you previously have these paperwork, update them typically as periods and people’s conditions change.

And a bonus url to Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood’s song Storybook Youngsters from their 1968 album, “Nancy and Lee.” I’ve mentioned that music in past article content I love the music so a lot, below it is once again. Choose particular take note of Hazelwood’s unbelievable voice.
